Frequently asked questions

Can I ride an e-bike?

Yes, you are very welcome to bring an e-bike and many participants do (with the exception of some Group Rides where bike carrying is required - see ride details for information). E-bikes are a great option if you haven’t ridden for a while and want to build your fitness and confidence riding in a group. If you want to hire an e-bike for the ride, I can provide some local recommendations.

Please bear in mind that some of the group (including me) will not be on e-bikes. Therefore the speed of the ride will be at non-e-bike speed.

Can I access the rides by train?

We can access amazing riding from both Staveley and Windermere train stations. If you would like to arrive by train then please let me know and I can meet you at the station.

What is the maximum group size?

The maximum group size is 6 riders.

Is there a minimum age limit?

All ages are catered for. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult who will be responsible for them throughout the ride. All riders under the age of 18 must have parent/guardian consent.

What level of mountain biking skills do I need?

For group rides please see the details of the ride for the skill and fitness level. For private guiding you must be able to ride a bike on the road, however you do not need any off road experience. If you have no off-road experience then please let me know so that I can select a suitable ride.

How fit do I need to be?

Each of the group rides gives individual time and distance so that you can work out which sounds right for you. We tend to all wait at the top or bottom of descents for people to regroup. If you want to join in but are still building fitness or it is something you are worried about, riding an e-bike could be worth considering.

What type of bike do I need?

You will need a bike that is in sound working order. You will need a mountain bike suitable for riding off road: flat handle bars (they don’t have to be completely flat, but they should not be road bike style “drop bars”) and tyres suitable for off road riding. Either front suspension or front and rear suspension is recommended, although not mandatory.

Can I rent a mountain bike?

I can point you in the direction of bike hire shops in the area that we will be riding, and suggest suitable types of bikes to rent for the type of riding that we will be doing.
