Terrain - Physicality and Technicality
Each group ride is classified by the fitness level and difficulty of the terrain. Each level is described below. It is not always possible to be completely definitive, so if you aren’t sure then please ask.
Terrain - Physicality
Physicality 1
Rolling hills at a steady pace, taking breaks as needed.
Physicality 2
Hilly terrain with some steep climbs of shorter length over smooth terrain.
Physicality 3
Hilly terrain with some steep climbs over smooth ground.
Physicality 4
Mountainous terrain with steep climbs over rough ground.
Fitness 5
Mountainous terrain with steep climbs over rough ground, including significant sections where you will have to carry your bike.
Terrain - Technicality
Technicality 1
No mountain biking experience required (although must be able to ride a bike).
Technicality 2
Gravel tracks, loose stones and bedrock. Relatively smooth, although does involve some lumpy rocks. Single-track trails where two cyclists would not be able to ride side by side.
Technicality 3
Moderately rough sections, and shorter sections with loose rocks, tree roots or wet soil/leaves. Ledges of up to one foot (lower then axle height) that can be rolled over (wheels not required to leave the ground).
Technicality 4
Rough sections, and sections with a combination of loose rocks, tree roots and wet soil/leaves. Ledges of up to two foot that can be rolled off/over (wheels not required to leave the ground). Sections of moderate steepness requiring good brake control.
Technicality 5
Combination of very rough and loose. Exposed sections requiring accurate bike control. Sustained steep and loose sections requiring accurate braking to control speed.
